French Bulldogs

There are many theories about the origin of French Bulldogs. The most popular theory is that in the mid 1800’s lace workers from England brought the smallest English Bulldogs with them when they sought work in northern France. The population of the little bulldogs grew, as they were loyal companions and ratters. The numbers of these little bulldogs grew very fast. Meanwhile breeders in England took advantage of the opportunity to sell undersized species of an old breed to fanciers and then declared it a new breed, including the “tulip” eared puppies, which came up at times in bulldog litters. The French Bulldogs were originally bred to be ratters, but are now lap dogs and loyal companions

On April 29 1899, the magazine “Country Life” takes up the story some thirty five years prior in fact [i.e. about 1865]. “The lightweight small sized bulldog was very common in this country, so much so that if the bulldogs weight was under 28lbs., they were encouraged to show them in shows such as Birmingham. This show was the most important exhibition of its kind in England during this time period. Then, the toy bulldog became the fashion rage in Paris. As a result, the celebrated Bill George of Canine Castle, Kensal New town, the most eminent dog dealer of all time, received carte blanche commissions from French customers to procure the lightweight Bulldogs. By doing so, England was demise of all the best specimens.”

When the new smaller, lightweight bulldogs gained popularity in France they became the favorites of the Parisians “Belles de Nut”, the streetwalkers. The reason these dogs became so popular is because of their exotic looks, which in turn brought great attention to their owners. This gave their potential customers a legitimate reason to strike conversation. These dogs were great for this because with there docile temperaments they would be content to nap for short stretches or when brought to hotel rooms without making a fuss. There are breed historians who have been known to find notorious “French postcards”, bearing images of the scantily clad French prostitutes posing with their little “bouledoghes francais”. The ownership of these little dogs was an aura of notoriety; these dogs became very popular with the well-to-do upper-class society. They became favorites very fast of the “artistic” throughout Europe.

The Russian Royal family had photos dating to around this time posing alongside their French bulldogs; they also imported several of these bulldogs from France. Often famous fanciers that had this breed included Toulouse Lautrec, the author Colette and King Edward VII. A French bulldog, at that time was insured for the astronomical sum of $750.00. This dog was aboard the tragic stricken Titanic. It is without a doubt that without the dedication and influence at the turn of the 20th century and the subsequent American fanciers, this breed would not be the awesome breed that you see today. The American fanciers organized the very first French Bulldog club in the world and they insisted that the bat ear associated with the breed was correct. Until this was established, these French bulldogs were shown the “bat” ear or “rose” ear. With all this said French Bulldogs are an international breed, with breeders all over the world being responsible for the French Bulldogs we see today.
